Women's National Team defeats Germany

BOCA RATON, Fla.---First half goals by Alex Morgan and Samatha Mewis led a come from behind United States 2-1 victory over Germany in the inaugural SheBelieves Cup Championship match in front of 13,501 fans at Florida Atlantic University Stadium Wednesday night.

It was the third match in seven days for both teams.

The US started off early when in the second minute Carli Lloyd made her presence felt. Lloyd stole the ball and made a run into the offensive third to let loose a shot that went just wide of the net.

In the 11th minute Whitney Engen passed ahead to Christen Press who raced in on goal and sent a shot with her left foot from ten yards out that was gobbled up by German goalkeeper Almuth Schult.

Press again had a chance in the 16th minute when she sent a pass forward to Morgan whose right-footed shot was taken by Schult as she came off her line to challenge the attack and keep the match scoreless.

The Germans started to mount an attack in the 23rd minute when Leonie Maier launched a right-footed shot from 25 yards out that went just wide of the far post. In the 24th minute US goalkeeper Hope Solo made her first save of the match off a shot by Isabel Kerschowski.

In the 29th minute Anja Mittag sent a hard shot from 22 yards out that bounced in front of the near post and rolled past the hands of Solo and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

That goal broke a string of 748 shutout minutes by the US since the Abby Wambach farewell match against China in December. This is the ninth match of 2016 for the US.

Morgan led the U.S. back as Meghan Klingenberg sent a high ball near the top of the penalty area. Morgan got by the German defender and sent a right-footed volley from eight yards out into the net to tie the score, 1-1.

The U.S. captured the lead in the 41st minute when Mewis stole the ball at midfield, made a run towards the penalty area and sent a shot from 20 yards out that bounced in the six-yard box. The ball went underneath Schult and into the net to make it 2-1.

The Germans pressed on the attack in the last few minutes of the first half but could not take advantage.

The Germans came out physically aggressive at the beginning of the second half as they continued to seek a tying goal.

U.S. Head Coach Jill Ellis utilized three of six substitutions allowed in this tournament in the 61st and 62nd minute when Lindsey Horan, Mallory Pugh and Tobin Heath were inserted into the match to freshen the defense.

In the 63rd minute Lloyd sent a through ball forward for Klingenberg breaking into the penalty area. The ball was just a bit too far ahead of Klingenberg, and Schult came off her line to gobble up the ball and thwart the attack.

In the 70th minute, Klingenberg intercepted a clearing pass in the German third. She sent a bending ball for Morgan that was charging into the penalty area but could not control the ball and it was grabbed by Schult.

Germany continued to chase the tying goal in the last few minutes of the second half and stoppage time, but the fresh legs of the US thwarted every move.
