Union adds Dutch defender Wijnaldum
CHESTER, Pa. -- The Philadelphia Union have signed Dutch defender Giliano Wijnaldum, the team announced Thursday.
Wijnaldum, brother of Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, is listed as a Discovery Signing. Wijnaldum, 24, has made 65 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie, and helped AZ Alkmaar capture the 2012-13 Dutch Cup, playing all 90 minutes in the final, under the direction of Union sporting director Earnie Stewart.
“We’re pleased to welcome Giliano to Philadelphia Union and are excited about the talent he adds to our defensive corps,” Stewart said. “As a young player who I have worked with before in the Netherlands, I know first hand the potential he brings to our club. We are eager to integrate him within the squad and believe he has a bright future with the Union.”
Wijnaldum, who played seven games for for VfL Bochum in the German 2. Bundesliga last season, developed with Sparta Rotterdam and AZ, joining AZ’s first team in 2010-11, making his Eredivisie debut against ADO Den Haag at the age of 18 on April 16, 2011. Wijnaldum played three seasons for AZ, totaling 24 matches in all competitions. Wijnaldum played for FC Groningen, making a career-high 26 league starts in 2013-14, then joined Go Ahead Eagles, making 19 Eredivisie starts, in 2014-15.
