June 24, 2010 A MINOR WIN Union top Reading affiliate 2-0
READING, Pa---An own goal and one by Nick Zimmerman gave the Philadelphia Union a 2-0 win over their minor league affiliate Reading united AC at Don Thomas Stadium Wednesday night.
The Union took the lead in the 34th minute, when a cross into the penalty area deflected off the leg of Reading’s Eric Schoenle’s leg and into the net.
After 60 minutes is when Philadelphia had a goal of its own. The Union’s Nick Zimmerman had a give-and-go with teammate Roger Torres. After receiving the pass back, Zimmerman had a beautiful shot and the ball found the back of the net over the out stretched hands of Reading goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo.
Zimmerman was in the Union lineup after seeing playing time on loan with the USL2 Harrisburg City Islanders.
United spent much of the game on the attack. In the 22nd minute, Reading was looking for their opportunity. United’s Ged Quinn crossed the ball across the 18 yard line to teammate Eric Detzel who received the ball with his foot in mid-air and shot at goal. Detzel’s quick shot fell wide to the right post.
At the start of the second half, the United had its opportunities to even the score. Schoenle booted the ball up field to Detzel whose spinning shot towards goal was jumped upon and grabbed by the Union goalkeeper, Brad Knighton.
In the 72nd minute, Reading was still working for a goal. Luke Mulholland beat Philadelphia’s defense and passed to Evan Frimpong whose shot outside the 18 yard line barely missed the right post. With just under 10 minutes left to play, Ray Gaddis passed the ball up the right field to Frimpong who toe poked the ball around Philadelphia’s defense, only to have his shot blocked.
Even with four minutes left on the clock, Reading was still working towards a goal. After Frimpong crossed the ball across the net, a United shot was blocked. However, Mulholland was there on the rebound with a turn-around shot, which Philadelphia goalkeeper Brian Perk, dove on the ground to save.
