Pumas, Tigres to Gran Final
America 3, Pumas 1 (Pumas advance, 4-3)
Club America won the battle but lost the war against top seeded Pumas on Sunday, posting a 3-1 second leg win at Estadio Olimpico Universitario but falling in the Liguilla semifinals by a 4-3 aggregate score.
Pumas, who won the first leg 3-0 on the road at Estadio Azteca, will face XXXX for the Apertura championship.
Darwin Quintero scored in the ninth and 26th minutes to give the Aguilas a 2-0 lead that held until the 84th minute, when Javier Cortes put away the clinching road goal for Pumas after being left unguarded in front of the goal.
Dario Benedetto set the table for both of Quinetro's goals, first with a sharp pass in from the right flank, then by teaming with the Aguilas' forward on a two-on-one breakaway.
Andres Andrade capped America's scoring three minutes later.
For the second straight match, America finished with nine men on the field after Paolo Goltz collected his second yellow card of the match in the 72nd minute, and Rubens Sambueza was sent off with a straight red six minutes later.
Tigres 2, Toluca 0 (Tigres advances, 2-0)
Fifth-seeded Tigres booked a spot in the Gran Final with Sunday's 2-0 semifinal win over Toluca at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Tigres won the aggregate-goals semifinal series 2-0 and will face #1 Pumas for the Apertura championship.
Javier Aquino scored the first goal of the semifinal set in the 69th minute, latching on to Damian Alvarez's pass back from the left end line. Alvarez headed in the insurance goal off Andre-Pierre Gignac's service in the 83rd.
Tigres will host the first leg of the championship series at Estadio Universitario.
