Breakers, Sky Blue go for NCAA champs in first round


LOS ANGELES -- NCAA champion Southern Cal became the third school to have three players selected in the first round of the NWSL College Draft Thursday.

Morgan Andrews (Boston Breakers) was the third pick, and Kayla Mills was fourth and Miranda Freeman 10th (both Sky Blue FC). UCLA and Florida State previously had three first-rounders in the NWSL draft.

The Boston Breakers selected Wisconsin midfielder Rose Lavelle with the No. 1 pick during the event at the NSCAA Convention. Previous first picks have included UCLA’s Zakiya Bywaters (2013) and U.S. Women's National Team players Crystal Dunn (2014), Morgan Brian (2015) and Emily Sonnett (2016).

Lavelle was the first of four selections made by the Breakers in the first round. The Breakers also selected Andrews, Ifeoma Onumonu (California) No. 8 and Margaret Purce (Harvard) No. 9.

The North Carolina Courage, formerly Western New York, selected forward Ashley Hatch (BYU) with the No. 2 pick.
