'Nova men advance to Big East semifinals
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Redshirt junior Will Steiner stopped three shots in a penalty kick shootout as the Villanova men’s team defeated DePaul in the quarterfinals of the Big East Conference tournament before a capacity crowd at the Higgins Soccer Complex Sunday.
The Wildcats (10-6-3), who won the shootout, 3-1, after playing to a 0-0 draw, will visit Butler in the semifinals Thursday. Villanova outshot the Blue Demons (9-7-3), 23-14.
After ‘Nova missed its first two attempts in the shootout, Zach Zandi, Shane Bradley and Lucas Hodges converted past Quentin Low.
“When you have Will Steiner on your side in a shootout,” Villanova coach Tom Carlin said, “you breathe a little easier. What Steiner is able to do is absolutely incredible. He’s so good at getting a read on the shooter. There is just a consistency in what he does. Time and time again, he’s been great.
“We were pushing all game. The guys were buying in and believing. We were pushing and couldn’t get one. We did everything we could to put pressure on them defensively. There were a ton of chances and we couldn’t get one behind them. Credit to DePaul. But we found a way.
“It means everything to be able to break through and push this program into a realm that we have been close to before. Now we’ve got to go get one more.”
