COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT: JORGE GOMEZ SANCHEZ
Meet the Candidates, and Vote!
Temple senior midfielder Jorge Gomez Sanchez is one of three nominees for the Philly Soccer News men’s college player of the year and the Soccer News Net Men’s College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Gomez Sanchez converted 14 goals (seven game-winners), tied for seventh in NCAA Division 1, in 18 games for the Owls (10-6-2). Gomez Sanchez was tied for second in game-winning goals behind Stanford’s Foster Langsdorf, who had eight.
Gomez Sanchez, who started the season with a four-game scoring streak, was named to the NSCAA All-East Region First Team, the ECAC All-Star team, and was All-AAC First Team, along with teammate Carlos Moros Gracia. Gomez Sanchez’ goal total is fifth on the all-time Temple single-season list behind Walter Chyzowych’s 25 and Charlie Duccilli, who had 23, 22, and 21 goal totals.
Highlights of Gomez Sanchez’ season included a goal in a 1-0 win over Penn State, the Owls’ first road win over the Nittany Lions since 1989. Gomez Sanchez, who played for CA Osasuna in Spain, specialized in set pieces, his left-foot placements presenting a lethal threat.
Last season, Gomez Sanchez compiled a five-game goal-scoring streak and finished with 13 goals (six game-winners) in 18 games in being named to the NSCAA All-East Region and AAC second teams, leading a revival as the Owls recovered from a 2-14 record in the 2014 season. Gomez Sanchez, who has been invited to the MLS Player Combine, concluded his two-year collegiate career with 27 goals, tied for fifth with Shawn Vogel on the all-time Temple list.
Gomez Sanchez was named the Philly Soccer News Player of the Week for the weeks ending Aug, 28 and Sept. 5 and 19.
Fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward selection of the Soccer News Net College Boot, and the winner of the popular voting receives the Soccer News Net Supporters’ Choice award.
