Temple Owl women pilfered by Pirates
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Temple Owls women’s team had hopes for a penalty kick denied in falling, 2-1, to East Carolina in an American Athletic Conference match Thursday night.
The Owls (3-15-0 overall, 0-8-0 conference), who lost their ninth successive match, fell behind as Annah Lindbert headed in a goal for East Carolina (5-11-1, 1-6-1) in the 18th minute. The Owls then appeared to have earned a penalty as junior Elana Falcone went down on a Kayla Cunningham corner kick.
"Everyone in the stadium knew it was a foul,” Temple coach Seamus O'Connor said. "Everyone on the field stopped and was waiting for the call but the official said he didn't see it."
Lana Spitler then upped the Pirates’ lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute.
Sophomore Juliet Esposito scored her first career goal for Temple, finishing off a deflected corner.
"The second half was great," O'Connor said. "We got the goal and had multiple second chances."
