COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT: DAKOTA MILLS
Meet the Candidates, and Vote!
Saint Joseph’s sophomore forward Dakota Mills is one of three nominees for the Philly Soccer News women’s college player of the year and the Soccer News Net Women’s College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Mills scored a Saint Joseph’s record 18 goals (eight game-winners) in 22 games, fifth in NCAA Division 1. Mills’ total was third among underclassmen, behind juniors Alexis Kiehl (Dayton), with a nation-leading 21, and Laadi Issaka (Mississippi Valley State), with 19. Mills was named Atlantic 10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year and chosen for the all-conference first team, along with teammate Emily Gingrich (her third successive selection). Mills was also named ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region second team. Mills was named to the All-Atlantic 10 tournament team as the Hawks (18-2-2) reached the final, a 7-0 loss to Dayton snapping a 19-game unbeaten streak.
Mills has totaled 28 career goals in 41 games, fifth on the all-time Hawks’ list (Gingrich holds the record with 43 goals in 75 matches). Mills set the school record for points with 41 last season and her 10-goal total as a freshman ranks tied for eighth on the Saint Joe’s single-season list.
Mills was named the Philly Soccer News Player of the Week for the weeks ending Aug. 28, Oct. 17 and 31, and Nov. 6.
Fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward selection of the Soccer News Net College Boot, and the winner of the popular voting receives the Soccer News Net Supporters’ Choice award.
