St. Joe's Hawks women advance to A-10 finals
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Dakota Mills scored twice as the Saint Joseph's women's team defeated George Mason, 5-2, in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament at the URI Soccer Complex Friday night.
The Hawks (18-1-2), who improved their unbeaten streak to 19 games, will meet seventh-seeded Dayton in the title game at noon Sunday.
The Hawks took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals from senior Shannon Mulvey (16th minute) and freshman Gabrielle Vagnozzi (23rd). Mulvey controlled a rebound off her own shot and finished inside the left post. Vagnozzi scored on a 20-yarder off assists from junior Lauren Dimes and sophomore Michaela Finneyfrock.
Mills, the A-10 offensive player of the year, finished a centering pass from Mulvey for a 3-0 advantage in the 52nd minute.
George Mason (13-7-1) rallied on a 74th-minute Abby Downey score and a 76th-minute own goal.
A minute later, Dimes upped the Hawks’ edge to 4-2 off a Vagnozzi centering pass, her 11th assist of the season, surpassing the Hawk record of nine set by Emily Gingrich in 2014. Mills scored her 18th goal of the season in the 88th minute.
