St. Joe's women advance in A-10 tournament

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Saint Joseph's women's team capitalized on an own goal and a penalty kick save to defeat Rhode Island, 1-0, in extra time in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the URI Soccer Complex Thursday night.

The top-seeded Hawks (17-1-2), who extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games, will face either George Mason or Fordham in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The deciding score resulted from a Taylor Ryan header off a Paige Bergman corner kick in the 102nd minute. Sophomore Grace Bendon (10 saves) stopped a Donika Murray penalty kick in the 32nd minute in earning her second shutout of the season. A-10 offensive player of the year Dakota Mills took 10 shots and Meghan DiPippa hit the post in the second half as the Hawks outshot the Rams (6-8-5), 20-13.
