Penn State women bomb Bucknell Bison

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State opened defense of its NCAA Women’s Championship title with a 6-0 victory over the Bucknell Bison in the first round of the tournament at Jeffrey Field Friday night.

The Nittany Lions (12-4-4) will meet No. 3-seeded Virginia in the second round Friday.

"I just want to start off by saying congratulations to Bucknell (16-2-2) on an amazing season," PSU coach Erica Dambach said. "It is obviously a great accomplishment to win the Patriot League, and they certainly came in here and played very well tonight. I also want to say that obviously this is the perfect way to end the home season on Jeffrey Field, in front of another great crowd, and with Nickolette Driesse having the game winner on her final home game in her senior year. We also had a shutout so I think that we we're firing on all cylinders tonight."

PSU (12-4-4) took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Nickolette Driesse (15th minute) and Charlotte Williams (41st). Haleigh Echard increased the advantage in the first minute of the second half, then sophomore Marissa Sheva finished an Echard rebound in the 58th minute. Williams scored her sixth goal of the season in the 70th minute and Megan Schafer added her sixth goal in the 81st minute.
