COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT: VANESSA KARA
Meet the Candidates, and Vote!
Drexel sophomore Vanessa Kara is one of three nominees for the Philly Soccer News women’s college player of the year and the Soccer News Net Women’s College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Kara was named first team all-conference, along with teammate Christiana Ogunsami, as the Dragons (9-7-4) finished in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings and reached the tournament title game for the first time. Drexel completed its second plus-.500 season (the Dragons had a 13-3-0 record in 2012) since the program started in 1994, then defeated James Madison (2-0) in the tournament semifinals, before falling to Northeastern (3-0) for the championship.
Kara, an NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region second team selection, totaled six goals (two game-winners) in 20 games, moving into fourth place on the Drexel career list with 17 goals. Kara, who set a school single-season record with 11 goals as a freshman, took on a playmaking role last season, adding five assists, and finishing third on the team among field players in minutes played with 1,730, behind Heidi Gspurning (1,828) and Madison Dunn (1,814).
Fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward selection of the Soccer News Net College Boot, and the winner of the popular voting receives the Soccer News Net Supporters’ Choice award.
